Every actor's career runs on four things.
At Actor Craft Club we call them the Four A's. Most actors spend all their time on the first two and almost none on the last two. This challenge is about the last two.
Acting
The craft itself. Can you do the work when you're handed a script?
Auditions
Doing that work under pressure, in the room or on tape, when a job is on the line.
Assets
Everything that sells you when you're not in the room. Casting lanes, headshots, reel, profiles, reputation.
Alignment
Your setup and your engine. Mindset, schedule, market, and the reps, relationships, and targets that fit your stage.
If your acting and auditions are solid and you're still not booking, the problem is almost always in Assets or Alignment. Those are the two nobody teaches, so most actors never find out which one it is.
Each day, one honest verdict on one piece of your career.
You're not building anything this week. You're finding out what's working, what isn't, and what order to fix it in. Five minutes a day is enough for that.
- 01
Your casting lanes
Do you actually know what you're being cast as right now? Not what you'd like to play. What the industry sees.
- 02
Your materials
Headshots, reel, profiles. Do they sell those lanes, or do they sell a version of you that doesn't exist yet?
- 03
Your setup
Schedule, survival job, market, mindset. Is your life built so that acting can happen, or does acting get whatever's left over?
- 04
Your engine
Reps, relationships, targets. Is anything bringing opportunities to you, or are you starting from zero every month?
- 05
Your ranking and next moves
You rank the four. You get the next move for your weakest one. That's the thing to work on this month, instead of all of it at once.
I've been on both sides of the table.
I'm James. I've been a working actor for over twenty years, on stage, on screen, and in the booth. I trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, and I also have a business degree, which turned out to matter more for this part of the job than I expected.
I've also directed and cast projects. So I know what it looks like from the other side when an actor's headshot doesn't match what walks in, when the reel shows a different person than the one auditioning, or when someone clearly has the goods and no plan for getting them in front of anyone. Most of the time, the actor has no idea that's the problem. Nobody ever showed them.
I made this challenge because the business side of acting gets taught as a pile of tips, and tips don't tell you what to do first. Five days, one piece of your career at a time, and by the end you have a ranked list instead of a vague feeling that something's off. That's what you'll walk out with.
Busy isn't the same as bookable.
You submit every day. You take a class. You get new headshots every couple of years. And you still can't tell which of it is working, because nobody ever showed you how to look at your own career from the outside.
Most actors don't have a business problem. They have four smaller ones and no idea which one matters. This week sorts that out, so you spend the next month on the right thing instead of all of them.
